Richard Hood Bio
Richard Hood has been in the wine industry for over 15 years. Originally born in San Diego, he attended UC Davis to study Food Science with an Enology specialization, graduating with a MS in 1998. Richard has diverse experience in terms of grape sourcing and production scale, and has had several positions throughout California, (from Fallbrook in the south, to Healdsburg in the north.)
In 2010 he relocated to Washington State for new winemaking opportunities, drawn by the high quality wines being produced, and the relative youth of the industry. Richard has since been actively involved in the Washington wine industry. Aside from roles in production, he was president, and Summer Seminar event chair for the Washington Wine Technical Group through 2017.
Richard has undertaken select consulting roles within Washington State. He became general manager and head winemaker for Stemilt Creek Winery, born out of one of these initial consulting relationships. He very quickly launched a new high tier brand, Ascent. These wines have met with consumer praise and critical acclaim alike, the 2015 Ascent Syrah recently garnering 93 points in the Wine Spectator. In fact, Ascent wine submissions have scored at least 90 points in the Wine Spectator through the 2016 vintage.
Richard’s wife Angeline is a high school math teacher and they co-own a successful tutoring business together as well, Eclipse Tutoring, LLC, operating in Tri-Cities and Spokane. Richard is an endurance sport enthusiast, and is thrilled to take full advantage of the trails Washington offers for mountain biking, hiking, and running.
